This is a standard composite gasket, which is basically a set of stainless steel fire rings around each cylinder with a different material holding it all together. Composite gaskets usually work for your standard rebuild, but once you ramp up the power failure rates begin to increase dramatically.
Notice that the embossing surrounds not only each cylinder bore, but also the water and oil passages. The Pro Seal gaskets use a proprietary Viton coating to the outer layers. This helps seal off small imperfections in the machined surface of either the block or cylinder heads to eliminate possible coolant or oil leaks.
Here, the assembled short block is ready, and the head studs have been installed. Before dropping the head gasket in place, make sure to clean the deck of the block with lacquer thinner on a lint-free cloth. Dorton gave us this very interesting tip: When using head studs, always make sure the stud's threads bottom out in the hole if possible instead of on the shoulder of the stud where the threads end. This helps limit warping the cylinder bores once the heads are torqued into place.
Dorton uses high pressure lube to lubricate the threads as well as the washers on each head stud. Other lubricants like Ultra-Torque also work well, just make sure you are consistent and use the right torque correction factor for the type of lubricant you are using. No matter what type of engine you are building, there is a simple method to ensure you torque each bolt in the proper pattern.

It will also list any special tools that you may need. Drain all of the oil and coolant from your engine. Refer to your car's service manual for specifics, but in most cases this involves removing the exhaust manifold, the intake manifold, valve cover and drive belts. On many engines, you will need to remove the timing belt or timing chain.
Catalog each part as it is removed. Either take pictures or write down each part to help you remember where everything goes once you're done. The cylinder head is held on by several bolts and some engines have a sequence for the bolts' removal.
Some head bolts cannot be reused and must be replaced. Follow the manual and manufacture requirements. Look at the head surface and the block along with the gasket for the failure areas. The gasket will be a thin piece of sealing material that can be seen once you remove the head.

If the pressure test reveals no cracks, have the machine shop resurface the head s. Don't ever re-install a cylinder head that has not been professionally re-surfaced and examined for cracks. Some bolts are what is called torque to yield type and would need to be replaced The cams on overhead cam motors will need the cams removed to service the cylinder heads.

They are used to align the gasket and head to the block. Grab one of the old M8 bolts too. Thoroughly clean the deck surface of the block and the head with a clean rag and cleaner like acetone. Place the cylinder head on top of the head gasket, matching the dowel pins. It should sit on there easily and securely, but we like to just thread one of the small M8 bolts into the top center hole.
Just a few mm in is fine. Take all the new bolts and install them finger tight. First pass of torquing the M11 bolts : spec is 22 ft-lbs for all engines and bolt sizes. Make sure to follow the sequence in the graph below. Second pass of torquing the M11 bolts : 90 degrees.
