Power integrity simulation tool

You can then quickly switch back to the standard layout and routing features in Altium Designer to improve your PCB layout. Learn More about split planes in your PDN and why you should avoid them. With a wide range of analysis capabilities, PDN Analyzer streamlines power delivery analysis.

The PDN Analyzer utility is accessible directly from Altium Designer; there is no other program to download or install.

This powerful tool follows the same trend as other utilities from Altium: it takes PCB layout data directly from the PCB editor and allows you to run power integrity simulations. The utility provides PDN analysis results visually as heat maps, allowing you to see voltage and current density distribution throughout your PDN. Altium Designer includes all the design, analysis, simulation, and component management tools you need to design world-class PCBs.

No other PCB design software company is this invested in your success. Altium Designer on Altium delivers an unprecedented amount of integration to the electronics industry until now relegated to the world of software development, allowing designers to work from home and reach unprecedented levels of efficiency. We have only scratched the surface of what is possible to do with Altium Designer on Altium You can check the product page for a more in-depth feature description or one of the On-Demand Webinars.

When a digital IC switches, the regulator needs to supply some extra current up to its maximum output so that the IC can supply its output current to downstream components. This switching action creates a transient oscillation, which can be seen as a voltage ripple on the power rails in the PDN. The allowed ripple should be chosen based on the noise margin in your downstream components.

The target impedance value can be defined as:. In a practical situation, this is very difficult, but as long as the PCB impedance spectrum is below your target impedance within the relevant frequency band, then the voltage ripple you see will be lower than your target value.

The real impedance of a PDN will have a complicated spectrum composed of resonances low impedance and anti-resonances high impedance. An example is shown below:. This complex spectrum arises due to parasitic capacitance and inductance in your PCB.

So what does this mean for signal and power integrity? If you look at the equation above, we see that if the target impedance value is large, then you will have a large voltage ripple. You should be able to naturally see that a digital signal with a knee frequency corresponding to a PDN impedance anti-resonance can cause ringing, i. When a component switches repeatedly, such as with a clock , you are now driving a forced oscillation on the power bus.

If the driving frequency matches a PDN impedance anti-resonance, then you will have a strong voltage fluctuation seen on the power bus. If a large number of ICs switch simultaneously, this causes the voltage seen by all other ICs to change significantly. If your power bus also provides power to analog ICs, this forced oscillation will be copied onto the output of your analog ICs.

Be careful with any components used for decoupling including capacitors! Using HyperLynx, engineers can experiment in their existing and proposed systems to compare design alternatives.

All of this in a very fast and easy way. With HyperLynx PI you can run Signal and Power integrity analysis from the Design planning phase throughout the Design process and in the Post Layout stage see the screenshot below to ensure that your products can be manufactured and work as intended in the field.

Proper analysis can ensure that you meet your performance target. HyperLynx uses a combination of EM solvers, simulators, and geometry processing engines to achieve extremely fast and accurate results by combining many different analysis engines into one easy-to-use environment.
