If you have not recently upgraded your operating system or changed anything else on the computer, and the printer is wireless to the Mac, please power cycle your network. This entails turning off the printer and the Mac, pull the power cord on the router for 30 seconds and then when it's back up, turn everything else back on and try to scan once it all settles. So it is at least finding the scanner now and I get make it work, but I lost the ease of directly accessing the HP scanner application like I used to be able to do.

After reading your solution, I have to say that I've tried to get something from Apple Update but I get nothing. Whenever, I click on Updates, it comes up with zilch. Now what? So far, going through System Preferences, etc. My scanner was working with Mavericks until recently so I don't know what happened. I' d appreciate any help. I was just wondering if the problem resurfaced, or is this a different issue? With the Apple Updates not showing anything in relation to an HP update, you can download and install the latest update for HP printers directly from Apple.

However, there is a Printer folder instead. Do I delete everything in that folder that has HP? When I first contacted this site for help, I had already used the uninstall in the HP folder in Applications. Since then, when I try to reinstall, I never get the HP folder anymore.
All I have in Applications is a gear icon for HP easy set up. Everything is so messed up. After I know whether or not to delete the HP stuff in the Printer folder, I'm going to start from scratch by disconnecting my printer from the power and the router.
